Remember Julia Roberts?: A Refresher Course
The title of this post is a ridiculous question, because I know for a fact that it’s physically impossible to forget Julia Roberts. As a huge Julia Roberts fan for my entire life, I admit that it’s been a few years since Julia was making appearance everywhere you looked. (Unless you’ve seen buses with her face on it for Mirror, Mirror while sitting in LA traffic).
This afternoon, Runaway Bride (one of my personal favorites) was on television and it struck me how much I’ve missed Julia. So here’s a countdown of my Julia Roberts films.
10. Ocean’s Eleven
Tess Ocean (2001)

A combo of two of the most attractive people in the world. How can you not love Julia Roberts as George Clooney’s scorned ex-wife in Ocean’s Eleven. Their witty banter made this movie more than your average thief flick.
9. Stepmom
Isabel Kelly (1998)
Stepmom combines humor and heart. Julia is the wife of Susan Sarandon’s ex-husband and is thrown into motherhood with two kids who hate her. Not to mention the fact that Susan Sarandon’s character isn’t her biggest fan either. But eventually, the two find a way to make it work if only for the kids.
8. Hook
Tinkerbell (1991)
Call it nostalgia or whatever but you can’t honestly say Hook isn’t one of the best films of the 90s. I still can’t wait to have a food fight with bright colored, playdough looking stuff. Add in the beautiful Julia Roberts and hilarious Robin Williams and it’s a fantastic film that stands the test of time.
7. Erin Brockovich
Erin Brockovich (2000)
Everyone knew Julia could pull off the romantic comedy in her sleep. But Erin Brockovich won Julia The Oscar for Best Actress. I still remember that night watching as she accepted. Despite her outstanding performance, the film only makes my list at number 7 because I love so many of them.
6. Runaway Bride
Maggie Carpenter (1999)
The fact that I saw this film about 8 times in the theater only increases my love for it. There’s something magical about this film that blends comedy and heartbreak. Can you sympathize for a woman who’s been labelled a “Man Eater”? Yes. Can you fall in love with her? Richard Gere proves that the answer to that is also a resounding Y.E.S.
5. Pretty Woman
Vivian Ward (1990)
As one of Julia’s breakout films, you can’t help but love Pretty Woman. Yet another example of Julia’s ability to charm even the harshest of critics. There is a reason she’s America’s Sweetheart.
4. My Best Friend’s Wedding
Julianne Potter (1997)
Why am I rooting for someone to break up a marriage? It’s because neurotic, evil Julia is somehow still relatable. Plus, I love watching Rupert Everett sing at the lunch table every single time
3. Eat, Pray, Love
Liz Gilbert (2010)
No one else could’ve played this part. The book is wonderful and the movie is pretty great too. I can’t imagine anyone else being Liz Gilbert. And how cool would it be to write a book about your life, have it turned into a movie and have Julia Roberts play you?!?
2. America’s Sweethearts
Kiki Harrison (2001)
“Kiki. Kiki-kens. My butter has touched another food. I need new butter!” This movie has some of the best one-liners. It’s celebrities making fun of Hollywood and celebrities. Can it be better? And a “fat” Julia Roberts? This movie is da bomb.
1. Notting Hill
Anna Scott (1999)
I love this movie so much that when we were in England, we visited Notting Hill. It was all because of this movie. It’s essentially the dream of everyone to be a normal person, meet a celebrity and fall in love. Or is that just me?
So there it is. There are certainly movies that didn’t make the cut. I almost expanded the list to 15 but that seemed unfair. Also, it’s worth noting that Julia has not one but TWO films in pre-production slated for a 2013 and 2014 release.
How do you feel about my list? Outrageous? Did your favorite get left off entirely? Please, feel free to be angry in the comments.
